The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in recognition of the importance energy management, created ISO 50001 :2011 , which will become the International Standard for energy management. The ISO 50001 2011 energy management system standard has been published on the 15th of June, 2011. It is anticipated to affect as much as 60% of world's energy consumption. ISO 50001:2011 specifies guidelines for organizations to establish the foundation, implement, maintain and enhance its energy management system. This allows the organization to adopt an approach that is systematic to achieve continual improvement of energy efficiency, including energy efficiency, energy use and consumption. It specifies requirements applicable to the use and consumption of energy as well as measurement, documentation and reporting, design , and purchasing practices for equipment, systems and processes as well as staff which contribute to energy efficiency. The Technical Management Board of ISO has approved the creation of an energy management project committee (PC 242 Energy Management), which will develop the new ISO Management System Standard for Energy.

The project committee is comprised of 35 participating countries and 5 observator countries. Associacao Brasileira de Normas Tecnicas ABNT (ABNT) and American National Standards Institute ANSI (ANSI), jointly act as Secretariat. The U.S. Council for EnergyEfficient Manufacturing and the U.S. Department of Energy support ANSI's work in the creation of the standard. The initial ISO/PC 242 Committee was established in Washington, D.C., in September of 2008. It met again in Brazil in March 2009.
